Greater Holland community rallies to provide support during COVID-19 outbreak

HOLLAND — As people across the U.S. continue to grapple with the Holland COVID-19 outbreak, communities are stepping up to assist those in need during a trying time. In the greater Holland area, residents and organizations have come together to help those around them.

Community meal distribution in Holland

School districts across the lakeshore have begun distributing free meals to families. Several districts have set up times and locations to give out meals to those dealing with food insecurity.
On Wednesday, Holland Public Schools Superintendent Brian Davis tweeted the district distributed over 7,000 meals during the week. Holland News
“Holland Public Schools you are amazing!” Davis said. “We provided 7,512 meals to students for the rest of this week! Thank you volunteers, bus drivers, food service employees and HPS staff who are working to make this possible.”
Food pantries and other shelters in the Holland area are taking part, too. Community Action House is delivering food to clients curbside and making to-go meals in order to limit contact between people when social distancing is encouraged.
“Our commitment is to continue our essential services while being as safe and responsible as possible for all of our community’s health,” CAH’s Executive Director Scott Rumpsa said. “It is more important than ever to continue our daily operations in delivering food to those most in need. The repercussions of school closures and economic struggle will be felt most acutely by the people we serve.” Holland News Updates
The Bridge Youth Center in downtown Zeeland is also distributing meals and supplies to members of the community, passing them out to residents by using a “drive-thru,” delivering over 800 meals on Monday.

Providing internet to the public

With some educators continuing their curriculum online, the internet is a necessary utility for many in the community. In order to make sure that residents have access to the world wide web, organizations are making WiFi accessible for free. Holland Political News
The city of Holland has set up a high-speed WiFi network anyone may connect to for free from the parking lot of Holland Civic Center Place.
The WiFi network is called MiHollandFreeWiFi and is accessible from the north lot. While the Civic Center building is closed to the public, the WiFi may be used while parked in the lot. Overnight parking is prohibited by city ordinance, so hours are limited to 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Holland Press Release Distribution Service
