Just Another Square Dance Caller: Authorized Biography of Marshall Flippo
Tijeras, NM (May 5, 2020). As an award-winning memoir and poetry author Albuquerque, New Mexico resident, Larada Horner-Miller is no stranger to using her talents for storytelling to preserve the life and times of the special people in her life. However, when her love of square dancing and a determination to preserve the life of a world-renowned square dancer caller collided, the resulting story, Just Another Square Dance Caller: Authorized Biography of Marshall Flippo became a time capsule of friendship, camaraderie, and community.
After returning from a stint in the Navy during WWII, Marshal “Flip” Flippo began his lengthy square dance calling career in the early 1950s. By the time he passed away in late 2018 at the age of 91, this Texan with a hearty laugh had made a place in history as an international sensation and a well-known figure in the world of square dancing.
“When I first met Flip, I had been dancing several years with the Albuquerque group and had heard so much about him before I ever met him,” author, Horner-Miller recalled. “After his retirement, one of my fellow dancers commented to that fact that someone should write Flip’s biography. This same friend looked at me and said ‘you’re the writer in the group, why don’t you do it?’ It sounded like a wonderful project to me, and I was honored to take on the task of writing this great man’s story.”
Flippo and Horner-Miller started the massive project in 2017 and after nearly a year of sifting through over 40 hours of recorded interviews and over 258,490 words, Just Another Square Dance Caller, Biography of Marshall Flippo was finally born.
“Flip was such a humble man,” Horner-Miller noted. “He never understood his place in the history of square dancing and what an impact he had made in the world. This book not only shares the story of his childhood and how his career started in a chicken coop, but it also shares entertaining stories of the callers and dancers he had met during his lengthy calling career. This book is truly a legacy to his body of work, wisdom, and love of life.”
